This is how we experienced the evolution of Microsoft Dynamics AX — A journey through its versions

It's been more than three decades since we learned about the Danish product that would later transform the way mid-sized companies manage their operations. This is our personal account of how we have lived through every change, from the days of Axapta to the modern era of Dynamics 365.

The Beginnings: Damgaard and the Promise of Axapta

It was the late 80s when Damgaard A/S, a Danish company founded by brothers Erik and Preben, surprised us with software that brought together everything a company needed: finance, inventory, production, logistics, and commerce. It was visionary, fully developed in a Windows environment, and we knew it as Axapta.

I remember the first version appearing in 1988 in Denmark and the United States. That system already promised what few imagined: a flexible and modern ERP solution for its time.

Expansion and consolidation

Over the following years, we saw Axapta grow. With versions 1.5, 2.0, and 2.1, we saw significant improvements in project accounting, OLAP reporting, and the first web-based tools. In 2000, we experienced one of the most exciting moments: the merger with Navision Software A/S. He was born like this Navision-Damgaard, and with it Axapta version 2.5. It was a significant leap forward: an integrated CRM and more robust features across all modules.

The Microsoft moment

In 2002, Microsoft acquired Navision-Damgaard. I remember the mix of anticipation and curiosity. We knew something big was coming. With Microsoft's backing, Axapta became part of a global ERP strategy. That changed everything: infrastructure, support, and above all, our vision for the future.

From Axapta to Microsoft Dynamics AX: the maturity of ERP

In July 2006, we experienced another milestone: Axapta 3.0 was replaced by Microsoft Dynamics AX 4.0I remember the excitement of seeing how the interface aligned with the Microsoft Office style. It was no longer just a powerful ERP; it was now a familiar, intuitive tool fully integrated with the Microsoft ecosystem.

Just two years later, in 2008, came Dynamics AX 2009 with its famous role-based interface. That changed our lives: each user could have their own view and tailored experience. It was as if the system understood who you were within the company.

The AX 2012 Era: The Big Leap

The launch of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 2011 marked a turning point. The platform became more modular, more open, and more connected. Workflows, integration with SharePoint, SSRS reporting… everything indicated that Microsoft was betting heavily on the next-generation ERP.

Then came the R2 (2012) and R3 (2014) updates. The latter, 2012 R3, was perhaps the most comprehensive of the on-premise era. It introduced improvements in logistics, transportation, and retail. Many of us still remember the stability and power of that version.

The biggest change: from AX to the cloud

In 2016, the story took another turn. Microsoft launched AX7, or simply Microsoft Dynamics AX in the cloud. For the first time, we accessed the ERP from a browser, with a modern web architecture and continuous updates. It was the beginning of the future.

Later in 2017, the new name arrived: Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations. And over the years, it evolved into two specialized solutions: Dynamics 365 Finance Y Dynamics 365 Supply Chain ManagementToday, we continue to see that evolution continue, increasingly connected to artificial intelligence and cloud services.

Final reflection

I look back and realize how much we've grown alongside this system. From the floppy disk days in Denmark to global cloud deployments, every version of Microsoft Dynamics AX has been part of our professional history. And while the names may change, the spirit of innovation remains intact.

Microsoft Dynamics AX isn't just software: it's the story of how technology can adapt, evolve, and accompany us decade after decade.

Today we continue writing that chapter, with our eyes set on the future of Dynamics 365 and everything that is yet to come.
